College Football National Championship Nears

Jack Butts

This past weekend was the first round of the college football playoffs, and both games were very eventful. Both games occurred on New Year’s Eve with the Fiesta Bowl being played first in the afternoon. TCU vs. Michigan kicked off at 3 p.m., and TCU got off to a hot start with the score at halftime being 21-6. I thought the game wasn’t even going to be close with how the first was going for Michigan, as they could barely move the ball down the field and had multiple turnovers. But in the second half things changed, and Michigan came out with lots of intensity. Starting the third quarter, Michigan scored four times and dug themselves out of a score deficit. But as the fourth quarter was ending, TCU continued to score and keep the lead. I was very surprised that TCU was able to win this game considering they were a seven-point favorite.

The next playoff game was between Ohio State and defending champion Georgia. Ohio State was a close underdog, but they showed that they were ready to play their best against the best. The Buckeyes showed how explosive their offense was, scoring 28 points in the first half against one of the best defenses in college football, which shocked me and many viewers. But Georgia continued to keep playing and give their best effort which helped lead to a massive second half comeback. Georgia went up one with five seconds left, but Ohio State still had a chance to win the game when their star quarterback led them down the field and into field goal position. The kicker was prepared to send the Buckeyes to the national championship, but in the final seconds he ended up missing the kick and Georgia was able to pull off the victory.

I am very excited for the national championship game between Georgia and TCU. Georgia is a 21-point favorite, but TCU will try and prove that they are one of the best teams and can beat anyone. The game is on Monday, Jan. 9, at 6:30 p.m., and this will be a must-watch game for any college football fan.
