A Crazy Finish to March Madness
April 11, 2023
With March Madness getting off to an insane start within the first day, many brackets were spoiled. The day started off with four-seed Virginia losing to a 13-seed Furman. Then later that night, 15-seed Princeton took down two-seed Arizona. The upsets kept coming with number one seed Purdue, a favorite to win the tournament, went out first round to Fairleigh Dickinson, a-16 seed.
After 20 million brackets being made this year after the first day there were only 787 perfect remaining. March Madness is known for upsets and underdog stories but not many people were expecting these many upsets. Round two held the same number of upsets as round one, with Kansas losing to Arkansas and Princeton upsetting Missouri, many brackets were left destroyed and only two number one teams remained.
The Sweet 16 is known to show which team is truly there to win and belongs, and sadly that meant number one seeds Alabama and Houston would both lose their matchups. Alabama lost to San Diego State and Houston lost to Miami, both teams respectively made it to the final four.
The final four games took place this past Saturday, with five-seed San Diego State facing nine-seed Florida Atlantic. After that, five-seed Miami will be facing four-seed Connecticut. Both games were amazing, with San Diego State winning on a buzzer beater and Connecticut demonstrating how dominate they are with a double-digit victory over Miami. The National Championship game was back and forth, but Connecticut was able to come out on top in the end and win 76-59. The Huskies were a dominant team this year and won every one of their games in March Madness with authority.
Overall, this March Madness was one to remember with many great underdog victories and buzzer beaters. I can’t wait to see what next year’s tournament holds and see how many brackets are busted after the first round.
