You’re probably thinking to yourself right now “who is Horace?” You may know him better as HG page, a senior here at Paducah Tilghman High School. He plans on going to college to study piano performance and eventually become a full-time professional musician. When I asked him why he said he’s been playing piano for so long (ten years!) that at this point he even sometimes dreams in piano! “For me it is the most impactful and personal form of creative expression and it’s just so much fun. I love music and studying piano is a great way to learn more about music as a whole. I plan to be a piano accompanist or studio musician after college, or a music teacher if college goes differently than I’m thinking.” If you have never heard him play the piano you are definitely missing out.
HG is involved Tilghman’s Marching Band, Choir, Prime Rib, National Honors Society (NHS), and TUMC Youth. He has attended Trinity United Methodist Church all his life and has been involved in the Youth program. He has also worked as the lead piano player in the TUMC Band for the past 5 years.
When asked what his favorite memory at Tilghman has been he answered, “The memory of Tilghman beating Mayfield was very important to me. I have been at football games since the beginning of high school, and the reputation we have against Mayfield was such a big force on the school. Seeing us beat Mayfield was very empowering and seeing everyone storm onto the field was inspirational.” Anyone that was at that game knows how much fun and how amazing everyone felt after that win! HG said that his favorite dress up day during spirt weeks would defiantly be throwback Thursday, specifically 80s.
His favorite year of high school was sophomore year. He says it’s the perfect balance of what’s new and what’s old. “I was used to high school but still had lots to discover and learn which is exciting. It’s also just nice not being a freshman anymore. I had a very good schedule and classes that were fun but not too challenging, and the class of ’23 was the best group of seniors, and all the people in Tilghman at the time were great.” His favorite memory from sophomore year was taking naps and ignoring class work in the music library during 4th period every day.
His favorite teacher is Mr. Morse because he has a very efficient and smart way of teaching his class that allows for it to still be interesting while still doing what needs to be done. “He has picked a lot of great books and poems that are fun to read and talk about, but also teach the important values in literature.” HGs favorite memory while in his class is giving the final presentation project dressed as Gerald Ford. Even though HGs favorite teacher was Mr. morse he will miss Mrs. Boyd the most. She is excited to come to school each day and every student here at Tilghman knows that. “Mrs. Boyd has a great energy that is missing from a lot of Tilghman. Even when I don’t have her as a teacher, I see her in the halls and know her reach across the school. She is always nice and honest and a great teacher which is rare to find.” Something you might not know about HG is his love for the sour raisins in the lunchroom. So, if you ever have any left after lunch throw them his way!
Last but not least some words of wisdom form HG “Lock in during classes especially early on, and stay involved with the school ecosystem and the resources of this school.”
