Lady Tornado Soccer Crushes the Competition

The Lady Tornado played the Mayfield Cardinals in their fourth game of the season on Monday, Aug. 23. Our ladies played an amazing game, with a final score of 12-2 as they mercy ruled the Cardinals. They couldn’t be stopped! Kiersa Atnip (11) led the way with four goals, while Abigail Wurth (11) ended the night with a hat-trick.  These ladies fought hard, and plan to emerge victorious again against Union County next Tuesday.

The Lady Tornado are led by a new coach this year, Mrs. Whitney Valdez. Valdez began her soccer career at the age of 7. She began playing for the National Soccer Academy at the age of 9.

“I idolized my older brother,” Valdez said, “he was a phenomenal player, and soccer soon became my passion and part of who I am”. She then had the opportunity to play overseas in a European tour. “When my family moved to Paducah, I began playing for the Western Kentucky Futbol Club,” she said. Valdez soon went on to attend Arizona State University.

This year’s Lady Tornado seem to be in good hands, with a coach who wants not only to help them on the field, but to also “help them realize that they are a force to be reckoned with off the field.”

The boys’ soccer team unfortunately continues to struggle this season. In their game against Mayfield, they came up short with a final score of 1-4. Carlos Cristobal (11) scored the boys’ single goal, assisted by Luke Birdsong (12). Thursday, the boys gave St. Mary a heck of a game! Taking them to double over-time, the Tornado didn’t go down without a fight. Nathaniel Skinner (11) scored both Tornado goals in the regular exhibition time, with an assist from Alex Mcmillan (9). With a final score of 3-2, the Vikings came out on top.
