Car Crashes into Elizabeth High School Auditorium, Injures Student During Morning Hours

Elizabeth, NJ – A frightening incident unfolded Monday morning when a vehicle crashed through the exterior wall of a New Jersey high school auditorium, injuring one student and prompting an emergency response from local authorities, officials said.

The crash occurred at Elizabeth High School’s John E. Dwyer Technology Academy, sending shockwaves through the school community and raising concerns about traffic safety near school zones.

Vehicle Slams Into School Auditorium

According to city officials, the crash happened at approximately 8 a.m. when a vehicle jumped a curb and sidewalk before slamming into the brick exterior wall of the school’s auditorium.

The impact caused debris to fall inside the building, where students and staff were present at the time. Authorities said the vehicle entered the auditorium area after traveling erratically moments earlier.

An official with the City of Elizabeth said the driver had been seen driving unpredictably on Bridge Street, then running a red light at Pearl Street before losing control and crashing into the school.

Student Injured by Falling Debris

Police confirmed that one student sustained a minor leg injury during the incident. The injury was reportedly caused by falling debris, not direct contact with the vehicle.

As a precaution, the student was transported to Beth Israel Hospital for medical evaluation. Officials emphasized that the injuries were not considered serious.

“One of the kids got hit by a brick. That is what I heard. But they are doing OK,” said Brian Willis, a student at the school.

Driver Also Taken to Hospital

The driver of the vehicle was also injured and was taken to University Hospital for treatment. Authorities said the driver’s injuries also appeared to be minor.

At this time, officials have not released the driver’s identity or stated whether impairment, distraction, or a medical emergency may have contributed to the crash.

Teacher and Other Students Unhurt

School officials confirmed that a teacher was inside the auditorium when the crash occurred. Fortunately, the teacher was not injured, and no other students reported serious harm.

Students described chaotic moments immediately following the impact as people inside the auditorium quickly exited the area.

“I saw several videos of people being inside the actual auditorium at the moment, and they started leaving immediately,” said student Dayry Nina. “If it was earlier, people could have actually got run over.”

Another student, Diego Sinche, expressed disbelief over the incident.

“I think it’s crazy. Something must have happened in that car,” he said.

Investigation Underway Into Cause of Crash

Investigators are now reviewing surveillance video from inside the school as well as nearby traffic cameras to determine how and why the driver lost control.

As of Monday afternoon, authorities said there was no immediate explanation for the crash. Police have not announced whether charges will be filed or if the incident is being treated as a criminal matter or an accident.

Officials noted that erratic driving behavior observed prior to the crash is a key focus of the investigation.

Street Closure and Building Repairs

Following the crash, Pearl Street was temporarily closed to traffic to allow crews to assess damage and begin repairs.

City officials confirmed that the school building was deemed structurally sound after an inspection. By noon, the damaged section of the auditorium wall had been secured and boarded up.

Despite the dramatic nature of the incident, the school remained open for the rest of the day, and classes continued with minimal disruption.

Authorities Stress Incident Was Avoidable

While no life-threatening injuries were reported, officials described the situation as a close call and credited quick response times and structural integrity for preventing a more serious tragedy.

The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities say additional details will be released once findings are complete.
