Some Kids at Paducah Tilghman High school disapprove of the cell phone policy that is enforced during school hours. The cell phone policy also applies to earbuds or headphones that they use whether they are wired or bluetooth. Some teachers enforce the policy and will write a student up as punishment and then others are more relaxed about it. The policy even affects students in the hallways of the school. Many students oppose it and some teachers think it is too strict. This article will discuss the pros and cons of paducah tilghman’s cell phone policy and see how well it is enforced, received, and followed.
The library of paducah tilghman is among the most peaceful places within the property, it is quiet and our librarian Mrs wyant does a excellent job keeping it clean, tidy, and organized for the students to use. Students could read a book or study for an upcoming test. Mrs wyant says “Kids are down here for a multitude of reasons. May it be studying, eating during lunch, or if a teacher is not present in the class. They are able to use their earbuds when reading or studying.” Her policy is a very flexible one as the library is a multi-purpose area for a multitude of things.
Mrs Broyles states “as long as one earbud is open, and they can hear. That is a lesser problem to me because I know some people do better with concentration as long as they got something going. Headphones aren’t something I’m as happy about as they tend to be over the ears and they cannot hear me.” She thinks that earbuds can be used in a helpful manner. That they can help students concentrate and get their work done. She does not seem to be bothered by the earbuds as long as the students are listening and finishing the work she has assigned. When I asked her if the cellphone policy should be enforced she stated “the cell phones should be enforced on the regular basis, they are major distractions in class”. Students will try to hide phones in books or computers just to access social media, or text friends. Miss Broyles has a morning routine that she does every morning. She says “i alway say every morning to put devices away.” Her daily routine ensures that students keep their phones put up during her class time.
Some students were also interviewed, Nathaniel Fletcher said “I think the policy is just fine, unlike other students i dont have have the constant urge to check social media.” Social media is a big problem for students, the urge to see what their friends posted or maybe a celebrity. When asked about the leniency of some teachers he stated “some teachers are too forgiving, a lot of my classes are chaotic.” some teachers really are more lenient than others, he had some things to say about the earbud policy as well. He explained “I feel like it depends, I think earbuds when the teacher is teaching are obviously bad, the teacher could be saying something important and a kid can’t hear it because of their earbuds and or headphones. But when you’re doing independent work, I feel like they are ok. Since you’re just doing a worksheet and nothing is going on. Besides, music helps some people focus, But I suppose with this school people would take advantage of that, and either abuse a policy like that or be too disruptive for it to stay in action for long.”
Many of the students oppose the policy and from what has been told it depends on the student. Many teachers enforce as well as provide leniency when it comes to using cell phones or earbuds in class. It may never change and many students may choose to go against it and act out in protest. While many others choose to go along with it and obey they policy
