Extreme Cold Grips Central Indiana as Subzero Temperatures Continue

Central Indiana – Residents of central Indiana are waking up to a harsh start Wednesday as subzero temperatures settle over the region. An Extreme Cold Warning remains in effect through noon, with wind chills expected to drop as low as -25° in some areas.

Morning Conditions

Clearing skies overnight have allowed temperatures to plummet, making layers essential for children waiting at bus stops and commuters heading outdoors. While wind speeds are light during the early morning, gusts are expected to increase up to 25 mph mid-morning, intensifying the already dangerous wind chill.

Several local schools are operating on delays or closures due to the extreme cold, underscoring the hazards posed by the frigid temperatures.

Afternoon Forecast

Although some cloud cover is expected to develop later in the day, residents can still expect plenty of sunshine. Highs will only rise into the teens, but wind chills will remain near zero, keeping conditions bitterly cold through the afternoon.

Thursday and Beyond

A Cold Weather Advisory will take effect from 1 a.m. to 10 a.m. Thursday, with wind chills dropping to -15° in the early morning hours.

Arctic air is forecast to linger over the Great Lakes region through the weekend, keeping temperatures well below freezing for several days. There is a chance for light flurries Saturday, with a better possibility for snow showers on Monday. Temperatures are expected to rise into the 20s early next week, offering some relief from the persistent cold.

Safety Tips

Officials are urging residents to dress in layers, cover exposed skin, and limit outdoor activity during the coldest periods. Parents should monitor school closures and ensure children are protected from the extreme conditions.

This prolonged stretch of arctic air highlights the importance of preparedness during winter, especially in regions prone to subzero temperatures and wind chills that can cause frostbite in minutes.
