Man Hospitalized with Serious Injuries after Being Hit by Truck in West Valley City Parking Lot

West Valley City, UT – A West Valley City man faces serious charges after allegedly striking another man with his vehicle in the parking lot of The Westerner, leaving the victim hospitalized with severe injuries, authorities said.

Incident and Emergency Response

Alfonso Garcia, 26, has been charged with aggravated assault resulting in serious bodily injury, a second-degree felony, following the incident on November 23.

West Valley City Police Department (WVCPD) officers responded to reports of a hit-and-run at The Westerner. Upon arrival, they found a victim lying unconscious in the parking lot, bleeding from the head.

The West Valley City Fire Department provided immediate medical attention and transported the victim to a local hospital. Medical staff reported that the victim sustained:

  • A fractured clavicle and scapula
  • A traumatic brain injury
  • A complex laceration to the ear
  • Extensive road rash

Authorities described the injuries as life-altering, underscoring the severity of the attack.

Investigation and Evidence

WVCPD officers reviewed surveillance footage from the bar, which reportedly captured a white Chevrolet truck involved in the hit-and-run. The truck’s license plate was visible, and records indicated it was registered to Garcia. Staff at The Westerner confirmed that Garcia had entered the bar and his ID had been scanned.

Police later located the truck at Garcia’s registered address. However, Garcia refused to speak with officers without an attorney.

Additional information came on December 2, when the victim’s brother recounted what he witnessed. He said that a white truck was driving slowly through the parking lot and stopped near their parked vehicle. According to the brother, the driver then struck the victim with the truck, dragging him 60 to 70 feet.

The victim reportedly grabbed onto the truck’s side mirror during the incident. His brother also noted that his ear was partially severed, in addition to other serious injuries. Both the victim and his brother said they did not know Garcia prior to the attack.

Garcia’s Account

On December 4, police interviewed Garcia. He claimed the victim had made a crude gesture at him, which led him to drive over and “question” the individual. Garcia stated that as he drove away, he looked in the rearview mirror and saw the victim fall, followed by another man running to assist.

Authorities say Garcia’s account does not align with witness statements and evidence captured on surveillance footage.

Current Status

A warrant has been issued for Alfonso Garcia’s arrest. Officials are urging anyone with additional information regarding the incident to contact the West Valley City Police Department.

This case highlights the dangers of vehicle-related assaults and serves as a reminder of the need for caution in public spaces. Authorities continue to investigate and are expected to pursue charges to the fullest extent of the law.
