Mobile, AL – A routine traffic stop in Mobile on Tuesday morning led police to arrest two suspects accused of stealing air conditioning units from homes and businesses across the area, capping a two-month investigation into a string of burglaries and thefts, according to the Mobile Police Department.
Authorities said the arrests followed increased patrol efforts after reports of repeated air conditioner thefts, a crime that often leaves properties damaged and residents without cooling during warmer months.
Incident Overview
The arrests stemmed from a traffic stop conducted around 9 a.m. Tuesday near Newburn Road and Highway 158. Mobile police officers on patrol spotted a vehicle they had been actively searching for in connection with multiple theft cases and initiated a stop.
According to police, the man and woman inside the vehicle were detained based on their suspected involvement in a pattern of burglaries and air conditioner thefts targeting both residential and commercial properties throughout Mobile.
Police Details on the Investigation
The Mobile Police Department said the thefts occurred over a two-month period, during which investigators received numerous reports of missing air conditioning units. These thefts often involve significant property damage, as outdoor units are forcibly removed, leaving behind exposed wiring and structural damage.
In a statement released by police, investigators said the suspects were taken into custody after officers confirmed the vehicle matched information developed during the investigation.
“Officers were able to locate a vehicle connected to multiple air conditioner thefts and detained the occupants for further investigation,” police said in a statement released by the Mobile Police Department.
Information released by the department indicates that detectives had been tracking patterns in the thefts, including locations, time frames, and methods used to remove the units.
Suspects Identified and Arrested
Police identified the suspects as Jesse Higginbotham, 39, of Wilmer, and Jennifer Dickerson, 45, of Semmes. Both were arrested at the scene and later booked into the Mobile County Metro Jail.
Authorities said the charges reflect the number of reported thefts and the extent of property damage connected to the investigation.
Charges Filed
According to jail records, Jennifer Dickerson is charged with:
- One count of first-degree criminal mischief
- One count of second-degree theft of property
- Six counts of first-degree theft of property
Jesse Higginbotham faces more extensive charges, including:
- One count of first-degree criminal mischief
- Three counts of second-degree theft of property

- Twelve counts of first-degree theft of property
Police said the charges were based on evidence gathered from multiple reported incidents involving stolen air conditioning units.
Jail Status
As of early Wednesday afternoon, both suspects remained behind bars, according to Mobile County Metro Jail records. Bond information was not immediately released.
Officials noted that additional charges could be possible as investigators continue reviewing other theft reports that may be connected to the case.
Impact on Victims and Property Owners
Air conditioner thefts often cause more than just the loss of equipment. Police say victims are frequently left with thousands of dollars in damage, including broken electrical connections, damaged foundations, and the cost of replacing entire HVAC systems.
The thefts can also disrupt businesses and leave homeowners without climate control, especially during periods of extreme heat common in southern Alabama.
For official updates and crime prevention information, residents can refer to public safety releases from the Mobile Police Department, which regularly shares alerts related to ongoing investigations and arrest announcements.
Police encourage residents and business owners to take preventative steps to reduce the risk of air conditioner thefts.
Authorities say timely reporting and community awareness play a key role in identifying suspects and preventing repeat offenses.
The investigation remains ongoing as authorities continue reviewing additional cases that may be linked to the suspects.
