Minneapolis, Minnesota – The Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent who fatally shot Renee Good last week suffered internal bleeding to the torso following the incident, according to two U.S. officials briefed on his medical condition. The injury was confirmed by the Department of Homeland Security, though officials have not disclosed how severe the internal bleeding was.
The details were first reported by CBS News, which cited officials familiar with the matter. DHS has not yet responded to requests for additional information and said the situation remains under review.
DHS Confirms Injury but Releases Few Details
Jonathan Ross, the ICE agent involved in the shooting, was taken to a hospital shortly after the incident. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem previously confirmed that Ross was treated and released the same day.
“The officer was hit by the vehicle. She hit him. He went to the hospital. A doctor did treat him. He has been released,” Noem told reporters earlier this month.
Officials have not clarified whether Ross required follow-up care or whether the internal bleeding posed a serious medical threat.
Agent Has Not Returned to Duty
According to one source familiar with the situation, Ross has not yet returned to work. The reason for his absence has not been publicly stated, and DHS has declined to comment on whether he is on medical leave or administrative status.
Video footage from the scene shows Ross walking away after the shooting, which raised questions about the extent of his injuries. Officials have said the visual evidence does not fully reflect internal medical conditions.
Prior Injury History Raises Additional Context
Ross is a 10-year law enforcement veteran with ICE and has previously suffered serious injuries in the line of duty. Court records show that in June, he was injured during an attempted arrest in the Minneapolis area when he was dragged by a vehicle, requiring 33 stitches and hospital treatment.
U.S. Border Patrol Commander Gregory Bovino said Ross has also faced multiple threats to his life following the recent shooting.
“He’s in a safe location. He’s recovering from those injuries, and we’re thankful that he’s recovering,” Bovino said.
Shooting Remains Under Investigation
The fatal shooting of Renee Good has sparked scrutiny and public debate as investigators continue to review the circumstances surrounding the incident. Federal authorities have not released further details about the encounter or the status of the investigation.
DHS officials say additional information may be released as the inquiry progresses.
