Powerful Santa Ana Winds Continue Across Southern California, Prompting High Wind Warnings

Santa Ana, CA – Strong Santa Ana winds are expected to continue affecting Los Angeles, Ventura, Orange, Riverside, and San Bernardino counties on Sunday, creating hazardous travel conditions and increasing the risk of downed trees and power lines. Officials warned that gusts could reach up to 65 mph in mountain areas, particularly where recent heavy rainfall has saturated soils, making falling trees more likely.

Areas Most at Risk

The National Weather Service (NWS) reported that the strongest winds will hit mountain, foothill, and valley communities. A High Wind Warning remains in effect until 1 p.m. Sunday for parts of the San Gabriel Mountains, Santa Susana Mountains, Highway 14 corridor, and mountain areas near Wrightwood, Mount Baldy, Acton, and the Angeles Crest, where gusts up to 65 mph are possible.

A separate High Wind Warning is also in place for the San Bernardino County Mountains, including Big Bear, Lake Arrowhead, Crestline, and Wrightwood, with gusts reaching 55 mph before gradually weakening later in the afternoon.

Why the Damage Risk Is High

Forecasters stressed that the combination of strong winds and wet soils from recent storms significantly increases the risk of damage.

“Damaging winds could blow down trees and power lines. Power outages are possible,” the National Weather Service said.
“Wet soils will increase the likelihood of damage due to fallen trees.”

Officials warned drivers to use caution on major roadways, especially in Cajon Pass, Interstate 5 through Tejon Pass, Highway 14, and along foothill routes, as high-profile vehicles are particularly vulnerable to gusts.

Wind Outlook Through Monday

Winds are expected to weaken slightly Sunday afternoon, but northeast gusts up to 45–50 mph will remain in many areas, keeping advisories in effect into Monday. Meteorologists say the winds will gradually ease early next week.

Safety Measures for Residents

Officials urge residents to take precautions to minimize damage and stay safe:

  • Secure outdoor furniture, trash bins, and decorations
  • Avoid parking under trees
  • Watch for falling debris and power lines
  • Exercise extra caution while driving, particularly in high-profile vehicles
  • Report outages or downed lines to utility providers immediately

Conclusion

The ongoing Santa Ana winds are expected to remain a hazard across Southern California through Monday afternoon, with strong gusts, falling trees, and power outages posing a significant risk. Residents are advised to remain vigilant and take all recommended precautions.
