Santa Barbara County, CA – A 24-year-old woman from Oxnard has been sentenced to two years in state prison for a fatal crash that occurred in 2023 on the 101 Freeway, officials announced Thursday. The crash, which involved excessive speed, tragically claimed the life of a 77-year-old man.
Reckless Racing Turns Deadly
The deadly crash occurred on August 13, 2023, near the Olive Mill Road exit in Montecito. Authorities say Ricki Newton, 24, was allegedly racing a friend at 113 mph on the southbound 101 Freeway when she lost control.
“Ms. Newton attempted to pass a Mercury Mountaineer when she lost control, colliding with the vehicle and forcing it over an embankment,” the Santa Barbara County District Attorney’s Office said.
The collision caused the passenger of the Mercury Mountaineer, Louis Hernandez Jr., 77, of Santa Paula, to be ejected from the vehicle, resulting in his death at the scene.
Remembering the Victim
During sentencing, Hernandez was remembered as a loving, hardworking man who dedicated himself to providing a better life for his family. The court emphasized the lasting impact his loss has had on loved ones.
“This is a reminder that a brief bad decision involving reckless driving can have tragic and life-altering consequences,” said District Attorney John Savrnoch.
Charges and Sentencing
Newton pleaded guilty to one felony count of gross vehicular manslaughter. Despite her defense counsel advocating for felony probation, the court sentenced her to two years in state prison. The hearing was described as lengthy, reflecting the severity of the incident and its consequences.
Public Safety Reminder
Officials note that high-speed racing and reckless driving can have immediate and devastating effects on the lives of innocent individuals. Law enforcement and the DA’s office encourage drivers to exercise caution and abide by traffic laws to prevent similar tragedies.
Conclusion
The sentencing of Ricki Newton serves as a somber reminder of the dangers of excessive speed and racing on public roads. Authorities continue to emphasize the importance of safe driving practices to protect all road users.
