Cedar Rapids, Iowa – Two individuals are facing a long list of serious felony charges following a violent home burglary in Cedar Rapids that left one resident injured and hospitalized, according to the Cedar Rapids Police Department.
Police say the incident unfolded Friday at a residence in the 200 block of 26th Street Drive Southeast, where quick action by the occupants helped stop the suspects before officers arrived.
Doorbell Camera Captures Suspects Before Break-In
According to a criminal complaint, investigators reviewed doorbell surveillance footage showing two suspects approaching the home prior to the burglary. Authorities identified the suspects as Jaelyn Miller of Cedar Rapids and Dejonte Davis of Keokuk.
The footage allegedly shows the pair taping over the doorbell camera in an apparent attempt to conceal their identities before forcing their way into the residence, police said.
Investigators say the deliberate effort to disable the camera demonstrates the burglary was planned rather than spontaneous.
Homeowner Assaulted During Confrontation
The complaint states that a male resident answered the front door, at which point the situation quickly turned violent.
Police allege that Miller and Davis assaulted the man inside the home, escalating the encounter further by pointing a gun at him and threatening to kill him.
The violent confrontation caused injuries significant enough that the victim later required hospital treatment, authorities confirmed. The extent of the injuries has not been publicly detailed, but police described them as serious.
Residents Subdue Suspects Until Police Arrive
Despite the threats and injuries, police say the residents of the home were able to restrain both suspects before officers arrived at the scene.
Responding officers took Miller and Davis into custody without further incident. Law enforcement credited the residents’ actions with preventing the situation from becoming even more dangerous.
Multiple Felony Charges Filed
Following their arrest, both suspects were charged with first-degree burglary and conspiracy to commit a forcible felony, according to police.
In addition to those charges, Dejonte Davis faces a series of additional felony counts, including:
- Willful injury resulting in serious injury
- First-offense possession of a firearm by a felon
- Going armed with intent
- Use of a dangerous weapon in the commission of a crime
- First-degree harassment
Authorities have not announced whether additional charges may be filed as the investigation continues.
Police Emphasize Seriousness of the Crime
Cedar Rapids police described the incident as a violent and dangerous home invasion, noting that the presence of a firearm significantly raised the risk to everyone involved.
Investigators continue to review evidence, including surveillance footage, witness statements, and physical evidence recovered from the scene.
Police have not released information regarding a possible motive or whether the suspects knew the residents prior to the incident.
Victim Recovering as Investigation Continues
The injured victim was transported to a local hospital for treatment following the assault. Police have not provided an update on his condition but confirmed that he is receiving care.
Authorities say the investigation remains active and additional details may be released as the case progresses through the court system.
Community Safety Reminder
Law enforcement officials are reminding residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activity in their neighborhoods. Police say doorbell cameras and home surveillance systems continue to play a critical role in identifying suspects and documenting criminal activity.
