Irvine, CA – An attempted burglary at a high-end handbag store in Orange County ended with two suspects in custody and roughly $100,000 worth of luxury merchandise recovered, according to authorities. Police say the suspects were caught in the act during an early-morning break-in that was captured on surveillance and body-worn camera footage.
Burglary Unfolds in Early Morning Hours
The incident occurred during the early morning hours near Jamboree Road and Dupont Drive in Irvine, police confirmed in a statement released Monday by the Irvine Police Department.
Authorities were alerted after building security personnel spotted suspicious activity on surveillance cameras. The footage showed two individuals scaling a wall to access the building before entering the business.
Police say the rapid notification allowed officers to respond while the burglary was still underway.
Suspects Caught on Surveillance Carrying Handbags
Surveillance video reviewed by investigators showed the two suspects inside the store wearing black hoodies, face masks, and sunglasses in an apparent attempt to conceal their identities. The suspects were later identified as 40-year-old Richard Bernard Spencer of Los Angeles and 30-year-old Marcellus Ronell Shelby of Hollywood, authorities said.
In the footage, both men are seen walking through a rear hallway, each carrying multiple luxury handbags, estimated at about a half-dozen bags per suspect.
Police estimate the total value of the stolen merchandise at approximately $100,000.
Attempted Escape Foiled by Responding Officers
As the suspects attempted to exit through what appeared to be a rear door, police say they suddenly pulled the door shut—likely after spotting responding officers outside.
The two men then ran up a nearby stairwell in an apparent attempt to evade capture.
Moments later, body-worn camera footage shows approximately seven Irvine police officers, including a K-9 unit, moving together through the hallway with firearms drawn as they searched the building.
Arrests Captured on Body Camera
During the police sweep, one suspect was located first. Body camera footage shows the man slowly lowering himself to the ground with his hands raised as officers held him at gunpoint. He was handcuffed and taken into custody without further incident.
Shortly afterward, the police K-9 alerted officers to the presence of another suspect hiding in what appeared to be an office area with cubicles.
The second suspect was then seen lying face down on the floor before being cuffed and arrested, police said.
Authorities confirmed that both suspects were safely detained and no officers or civilians were injured during the operation.
Multiple Felony Charges Filed
Following their arrests, Spencer and Shelby were booked into the Orange County Jail. Police say both men are facing multiple felony charges, including:
- Burglary
- Grand theft
- Conspiracy
- Vandalism
- Resisting arrest
Investigators have not said whether the suspects are connected to other recent retail burglaries, though the case remains under review.
Stolen Merchandise Returned to Store
Police confirmed that all of the stolen luxury handbags were recovered and returned to the victimized business.
Authorities credited the successful outcome to quick reporting by building security, effective surveillance systems, and coordinated police response.
The Irvine Police Department emphasized that early notification and cooperation between private security and law enforcement played a key role in preventing the suspects from escaping with the merchandise.
Police encourage businesses to maintain strong security measures and urge the public to report suspicious activity immediately.
