Atlanta, Ga. – Snow could make a rare appearance across parts of the southern United States this weekend, as forecast models increasingly point to the potential for flakes stretching from the Florida Panhandle through Georgia, the Carolinas, and into Virginia. “Far too early and too far out in timescale to talk with certainty about this, but there is some snow potential showing up from Sunday into the early part of next week that finds itself all the way up the coastline,” said Ian Oliver, speaking Wednesday.

Arctic Air Sets the Stage for Wintry Weather
Earlier this week, a surge of Arctic air pushed into the Southeast, triggering cold weather alerts and even raising concerns about freezing iguanas in Florida. Meteorologists say this cold blast may soon be reinforced by another push of bitter air moving south from Canada.
This reinforcing cold is expected to interact with moisture being drawn north from the Gulf of Mexico, a combination that could allow snow to develop in areas not accustomed to winter precipitation.
“It’s this dip in the jet stream that makes this possible,” Oliver explained.
Snow Possible From the Gulf Coast to the Carolinas
As freezing temperatures settle in, moisture overrunning the cold air could allow snow to break out as early as Saturday night across parts of the northern Gulf Coast. Forecast guidance suggests the snow threat may then expand inland and eastward into northern Florida, southern Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina through Sunday.
While snowfall amounts are still unclear, some models indicate the possibility of plowable snow, which could cause significant travel disruptions across southern communities that lack winter-weather infrastructure.
